I’ve been a health coach for six years and I have worked with many clients over those six years. It never ceases to amaze me that there are very few who work with me to prevent disease.  A majority of my clients have some kind of ailment and look to me to help them change their circumstances.  I have always said that it takes a lot less energy to prevent disease than to fight your way back when you have one.   I speak from experience. I watched my father try to fight his way back from the complications of diabetes and lose his battle.  Had I known then what I know now about nutrition, I am convinced that my Dad would still be alive today.

Food is a very powerful healer. I have watched people reverse Type 2 diabetes, thyroid issues, and even cancer by studying the healing power of food.  Everything that we need to be healthy is found in nature, but yet we rely on pharmaceutical drugs to make us well.  What they really are doing is making us unwell. These drugs mask the symptoms. Not only do they not cure the disease, but they also cause a plethora of dangerous side effects.  They are not solving problems, they are creating more.

If this is the case, then why do we always wait until there is some sort of crisis like sitting in the emergency room having a heart attack, before we make our health a priority? This brings us to the point where we need to go on medication.  A wise man once said to me that “If you don’t have your health, then you have nothing”, and it is so true. Your health affects every aspect of your life, from the relationships that you keep, to your work and home life.  Not to mention that poor health adds another layer of stress to your life: managing your condition properly, driving back and forth to the doctor’s office, and spending extra money on doctor’s fees.  Let’s face it, we are already stressed out to the max.  Add another layer and you may feel like the world is crashing in on you.

Do we think we’re invincible and that nothing could possibly happen to us when it comes to our health? To put it into perspective:

  • As of May 2015, 29.1 million people in the U.S are suffering from diabetes
  • About 85.6 million Americans are living with some form of cardiovascular disease or the after effects of stroke.
  • 400,000 people in the US suffer from Multiple Sclerosis
  • It is estimated that 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, 13 million of which are undiagnosed.

The answer to that question is an emphatic NO!!!! We are not invincible.  Do we feel that we are too busy to make our health a priority, or is it that we just don’t care? Unfortunately, being unwell has become the new normal. The truth is, it is not normal. Your body is meant to feel good, not bad.  Millions of people are suffering in this country and they don’t’ have to be.  Have you ever heard the expression that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure?  We need to be focusing on prevention.  It is not as difficult as you think it is.  Working with a health coach is a great way to not only get educated on nutrition, but also to keep you motivated to reach your health goals. We are also trained to examine the blocks that are preventing you from reaching your health goals and to help you get over them.

Don’t wait until it is too late and you have to spend countless hours and money trying to get yourself well again. Life is mean to be enjoyed.  Having to deal with a lifetime of illness is not enjoyable.  Don’t make the same mistake that so many other people make. Your health is a gift. Protect it with everything you have, because once you lose it, you will be sorry that it is gone.
